Computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacturating (CAD/CAM) equipment was introduced to dentistry in the early 1980´s, and the first commercial equipment was reported soon afterward. With the emphasis on the use of computer-assisted design/computer assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, various production techniques have been developed for enhancing the fabrication of consistent and predictable restorations in terms of strength, marginal fit, and esthetics.
These systems all-ceramic restorative systems may allow clinicians to use traditional clinical procedures similar to those used in the fabrication of metal-ceramics restorations in terms of preparation design and cementation procedures. With CAD/CAM technology, ceramist use new techniques and technologies in addition to traditional ones. Such new technologies may allow the production of consistent high-quality zirconium oxide (Kind of porcelain) frameworks in terms of design and fabrication, strength, fracture toughness, and stress-corrosion resistence.
Hygienically, the zirconium crowns retain less plaque and calculus than base metal frame crowns, therefore promoting healthier gums.
